What is Flavored Coffee?

Maybe you're a lover of flavored coffee, or maybe you're just wanting to add some spice to your morning or afternoon brew. Regardless of why you're looking for flavored coffee...

Flavored coffee beans are simply that: coffee beans flavored with both natural and artificial oils or flavorings, specifically to mimic your favorite non-coffee dessert.

You can basically get any coffee flavor. From classics like vanilla to hazelnut, to crazy dessert flavors like red velvet, tiramisu, or creme brulee, the pre-made flavors of coffee are endless these days.

How is Flavored Coffee Made?

Coffee that tastes like something other than coffee... tempting... but how exactly are flavored beans made?

There are a lot of different ways that coffee roasters can make flavored beans. One of the most typical ways of making aroma-heavy beans is to roast the beans, then toss in the flavoring as the coffee finishes roasting. It's usually in the form of syrup, which gives the beans an oily body.

Flavored coffee can be brewed in any way that you choose, but I have found that using a classic french press is an awesome way to make these beans.

Although fair warning, flavored coffee can typically be hard on the stomach, among other things...

Why Flavored Coffee Isn't the Best Coffee

With the tempting options of flavored coffee beans, coffee lovers should be aware of what they are actually getting. Buying flavored coffee beans probably means you are skimping on the quality and freshness of the coffee itself.

Usually, the older beans are bathed in syrup and drenched in different oils to get the beans to taste and smell like your favorite dessert. Not only are they not the best quality, but they usually have a ton of preservatives and artificial ingredients, unfortunately.

The flavors are typically so strong that it masks the taste of older beans, making you think you're still getting a fresh batch of coffee.

A lot of flavored blends are not made with Arabica beans too, which is the best quality beans on the market. Beans like robusta are typically used because coffee companies can mask the coffee taste completely.

You pay more for bad coffee. Lame.

Some coffee drinkers don't mind because of the strong delicious flavor, but I think it should be known that quality typically lacks when drinking flavored brews.

Finding a coffee company that makes flavored coffee with real ingredients and fresh beans is difficult, but not impossible.

A few things you should avoid adding to coffee:

To get a deliciously tasty flavored brew, you can always try flavored syrups! And generally for simple flavors like Vanilla or Hazelnut, that's totally what you should use vs. a pre-made flavored coffee.

Try Flavored Coffee Syrups

You don't want to skimp on quality and freshness, right? Or maybe you want to have some control with how much flavor is in your coffee. Trust me, I get it.

This is where flavored coffee syrups come in! These syrups will make you feel like a professional barista in your own home.

You know how you order that vanilla latte at your local coffee house? You just ordered a quality espresso with delicious coffee syrup (for probably an extra $1). Give another pump to your brew, or maybe you want to mix it up: the great thing about coffee syrups is the control you get with your flavor!

If you're trying to watch the calories, you can even get sugarless syrups.

Amazing.

Like flavored beans, the options that you have for coffee syrups are endless. I've included a couple of really great coffee syrups in my list of favorite flavored coffee below, if you want to go that route!

You can also try coffee creamers to add flavor to your favorite coffee. Click here to see my favorite dairy alternative coffee creamers.

Still convinced that you want your next batch of flavored coffee? Let's get into it then! Here are the best tasting and best quality Flavored Coffees on the market. As mentioned, I've also added a couple of my favorite syrups to the list.

  • Medium Roast
  • Full of flavor
  • Vegan!

This coffee has a punch of sweet flavor! It's a vegan and keto friendly blend of beans that taste exactly like strawberry cheesecake: it's crazy good.  Plus, this blend is 100% Arabica beans meaning you get the best quality coffee while still enjoying a powerful flavored brew.

  • Lighter Roast
  • 100% Arabica Beans
  • Blueberry Crumble Flavored

Christopher Bean's Blueberry Crumble blend tastes JUST like blueberries. It's flavorful, fresh, and made with 100% Arabica beans. It's definitely tastes like a light roast, which isn't my favorite. If you are looking for coffee that doesn't taste like coffee, then this is your blend.

  • Medium roast
  • Sweet aftertaste
  • Classic hazelnut flavor

San Francisco Bay's Hazelnut Creme coffee beans are the classic flavored coffee. A medium roast that is sweet without being overpowering, I definitely recommend this for the coffee drinker who is looking for a little something extra. Plus, this small family owned company has awesome customer service. It's a good coffee, and I honestly don't have any complaints!

  • Medium Roast
  • Great pecan pie flavor
  • Quality beans

Copper Moon Coffee's Southern Pecan reminds me of something I'd order at a luxury coffee shop. This blend isn't just flavorful, it's also sustainable!  The bold pecan flavor compliments the quality beans perfectly. This blend is a great   medium roast for days when you want a treat.

  • Medium Roast
  • Subtle cherry flavor
  • Sweet aftertaste

Coffee Beanery's Michigan Cherry blend is for the coffee drinker who wants a subtle flavor. It's not bold, and if it wasn't for the sweet aftertaste, I wouldn't have named it flavored coffee. But don't get me wrong: this blend makes a good cup of coffee. It's just not as strong as the other flavored coffees on this list.

  • Bold flavor!
  • Smells and tastes delicious
  • 100% Arabica Beans

Lola Savannah specializes in quality flavored coffees. Their Tiramisu is the perfect balance of sweet flavor that smells incredible, all while still being a bold cup of coffee.  Crafted with 100% Arabica Beans in every blend that they create, I know that I can trust Lola Savannah when it comes to great quality coffee!

  • Single Origin Coffee: Brazil
  • Medium Roast
  • Bourbon with notes of sweet chocolate.

Three words: Alcohol. Flavored. Coffee. Honestly, what else would you want? Oak & Bond's coffee blends are original and delicious. The single origin blend from Brazil, is a perfect medium roast. It's equally bold with a rich bourbon flavor while still having the fresh taste of a good cup of coffee.

  • Medium Roast
  • Roasted in small batches
  • Vegan

Bones Coffee is slowly becoming one of my favorite coffee companies. They are such a versatile company: every blend has an amazing and flavorful taste while being vegan, keto-friendly, AND 100% Arabica beans. This blend is a classic vanilla flavor with a nice twist of rum. It's a great blend for the coffee drinker who wants to ease their way into the world of flavored coffee.

  • Vanilla Bean Syrup
  • No artificial flavors
  • No preservatives

Okay... so maybe you aren't convinced that you want a flavored coffee. Getting a coffee syrup will make all your flavored coffee dreams come true, trust me. Sonoma Syrup's vanilla bean is a classic and bold flavor that will give your coffee the perfect amount of rich vanilla. It's a great option for those that want more control over their coffee flavor. Plus, it's all natural!

  • Simple syrup
  • Made in small batches
  • Perfect hazelnut flavor

I always have to have hazelnut syrup in my coffee collection. Why? Because hazelnut is the perfect pairing with coffee. Pink House Alchemy's hazelnut syrup takes hazelnut to the next level. This versatile syrup can be used in just about anything and is naturally sweetened.

There are some incredible flavored coffee choices here, but when I want flavored coffee, I want something that tastes like a cheat day dessert. That's why I'm choosing Bones Coffee Strawberry Cheesecake as my top pick from this list. The flavor is awesome while still being a quality and bold cup of coffee.

Don't lose sight of quality when searching for your next experimental flavor. It's possible to have a good cup of coffee that checks off all the boxes on your coffee list!

Happy Brewin', friends!
